Approach to the study of speeches in Justin's Epitome

Abstract

Justin’s Epitome records some speeches that Trogus had included in theHistoriae Philippicae. Justin abridges and modifies a great deal of these passages, which appear in most cases in oratio obliqua, following an option that he attributes to Trogus. Justin’s manipulation of the text makes these discourses very problematic to study: sometimes they are extremely shortened, or they completely lack any kind of settings, or they are moved from their original place, or they may even appear in direct style.
