Abstract

It is now well established that the Scholiasts of Apollonius of Rhodes and Stephanus of Byzantium exhibited a significant degree of proximity in their handling of sources, particularly regarding Greek periplography, which has since been lost. This paper undertakes a comparative analysis of both transmitters with the aim of uncovering new evidence of their interconnectedness. The focus of this study is the treatise On Harbours by the periplographer Timagetus (late 4th century BCE), a work that has been preserved solely through citations by Stephanus and the Scholiasts. A close philological examination of the transmitted fragments reveals, at least hypothetically, that the connection between the two was likely very strong, and it is plausible to suggest that Stephanus may have directly utilized the Scholia to Apollonius in certain instances.
