The Gallic Empire of the year 70 A.D.

The death of Nero brought an end to the Julio-Claudian dynasty and ushered in the civil war of the four emperors. During the final stage of the war, after the death of Vitellius, an episode occurred that has been labeled by historians as the “Batavian Revolt”. The rebellion spread, with some Gallic and Germanic peoples joining forces against Emperor Vespasian. Tacitus becomes our main, almost exclusive, source for analyzing the episode. The author refers to the organization of the participating Gallic peoples, the Treveri and the Lingones, as Imperium Galliarum. However, studies of the rebellion have focused on Julius Civilis and the Batavians as the protagonists. Therefore, it is proposed that an independent analysis of the Gallic Empire, without neglecting the context of the rebellion and the civil war. Also provide an identity-based interpretation to help us understand who took part in the rebellion and their motivations for doing so.
